Welcome to the CNS 2025 Thematic Conference

Advances in Research & Practice:
80 is the New 50 – Staying Well as we Age

Conference co-chairs:

Stéphanie Chevalier, PhD, RD - McGill University
Heather Keller, PhD, RD - University of Waterloo

Join us for an enlightening and transformative one-day conference dedicated to exploring the physiological changes of aging and the pivotal role of nutrition and exercise in promoting healthy aging.

Older adults are the fastest growing demographic in Canada, with 19% of Canadians aged 65 and older, accounting for 7.5 million people. There are significant gaps in care for this population, including limited access to healthcare, severe mental health impacts due to isolation, and a rise in cognitive impairment, dementia, and frailty.  Addressing these challenges is essential for promoting healthy aging, which refers to the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables well-being in older age. Healthy aging encompasses various aspects such as physical health, mental health, social engagement, and maintaining independence, all of which are crucial for improving the quality of life for older adults and closing the existing gaps in care.

As the global population ages, understanding how diet and physical activity impact longevity and quality of life are more important than ever. This conference brings together leading experts, researchers, and practitioners in the fields of nutrition, exercise, gerontology, and healthcare to share cutting-edge research, insights and practical strategies.

Conference learning objectives:

By the end of this conference, attendees will be able to:

  1. Describe the physiological changes of aging and the unique nutritional needs of older adults.
  2. Examine the evidence and knowledge gaps on dietary guidance for musculoskeletal, cognitive and overall health in older adults
  3. Recognize and accommodate the diverse dietary needs and preference of older adults, including socio-economical, cultural and ethical considerations.
  4. Summarize key nutrients essential for preventing age-related diseases.
  5. Explain the role that exercise plays in healthy aging

Whether you are a primary care provider, dietitian, nutritionist, allied healthcare provider, researcher, or trainee, this conference offers invaluable insights and practical tools to enhance your research and practice and improve the lives of older adults.
