Beyond the traditional prevention of chronic diseases, we will review the recent evidence pertaining to different dietary patterns for overall healthy aging encompassing living free of chronic diseases, and maintaining cognitive, physical and mental health. The dietary patterns will include the alternative healthy eating index (AHEI), the Mediterranean diet, the dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH), the Mediterranean-DASH (MIND), the healthful plant-based diet, empirical dietary index for hyperinsulinemia, empirical dietary inflammatory pattern, the recently elaborated planetary health diet, the Canadian Healthy Eating Food index and the Brain Health Food Guide. We will also discuss evidence related to individual food groups and foods.
